A Day at the Races

This may not be of interest to very many people, but I find it fascinating for a few reasons.  Some are: to see how most of the people got all dressed up to go to a dusty, dirty racetrack.  I believe that they usually made the trip in several vehicles, especially if the women went with them.  That night on the way back to Scranton, one of the cars went off the road, the car flipped over after leaving the road and the photos show most of the damage done. One person was killed, one lost an eye, resulting in losing his job. My grandfather loaned him money to start his own business venture which took awhile to get off the ground, but he later on became one of the most well known and well respected business man in the Scranton area.  I can still remember going into his place of business many, many times with a family member and even as a very young child being treated like somebody really special.  I believe it was due to his gratitude to my grandfather.

I have conflicting sets of information regarding where this race was held, some said a raceway in Ithaca, NY, some said Monticello, others remembered it as being somewhere completely different.  All agree it was in New York State.  I am under the assumption that the group made many trips to the New York area for auto racing and thus the confusion so many years later, and possibly that the name of the racetrack changed over the years.

The following pictures are just of the race in general.

The following pictures are of the car that overturned that night.  They don't quite build them like that anymore.  There are more pictures of the car, I just can't put my finger on them right now.  But these were the ones with the most damage.
