Elizabeth A. Smith

    Elizabeth A. "Bette" Smith, 85, a resident of Manor Care of Allentown, a former longtime resident of Scranton, died Wednesday morning at Manor Care after an illness. Her husband, Joseph L. Smith, died March 11, 1999.

    Born in Scranton, daughter of the late Anthony and Mary Bessmer Mehren, she was a     graduate of Scranton Technical High School and was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, St. John's Senior Citizens, the Friendly Senior Citizens and Lutheran Church Women United. Before retirement, she was employed as a seamstress by the Family Garment Co.

    Surviving are a son, Thomas J., Scranton; two daughters, JoAnn E. McKay, Dewitt, Mich.; and Barbara M. Ries, Macungie; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

    She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Caroline Holbert and Lillian M. Ruch, and a brother, Edward Mehren.

    The funeral will be Saturday with services at 11 a.m. in St. John's Lutheran Church by the Rev. Lester Stephenson, interim pastor. Entombment, Cathedral Cemetery.
