Matthew T. Weiss Sr.

    Matthew T. Weiss Sr., a lifelong resident of Scranton, died Thursday afternoon at Moses Taylor Hospital after a brief illness. He and his wife, the former Felicia Chrapowicki, celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary Jan. 27.

    Born in Scranton, son of the late Theodore P. Weiss and Catherine Byron Weiss Yerke, he was educated in Scranton public schools and was a member of St. Mary's of the Assumption Church, South Scranton. He served three years with the 109th Infantry Service Company before enlisting in the Army.

    An Army veteran of World War II, he served as a staff sergeant in the European theater. He was a member of American Legion Major Poch Post 948, South Scranton, a past commander of American Legion East Scranton Post 966 and a deputy commander of District 11. Prior to retirement, he was employed by the city of Scranton in the single tax office.

    He was a very devoted and loving husband and a caring father. He cared deeply for all his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and will be sadly missed.

    Also surviving are a son, Matthew T. Jr., Scranton; two daughters, Barbara F. Viola, Philadelphia; and Patricia M. Clemons, St. Augustine, Fla.; two brothers, John Yerke, Dickson City; and Henry Yerke, Scranton; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

    He was also preceded in death by three sisters, Catherine Kornetka, Grace Hickling and Helen Godek, and three brothers, Paul Weiss, Theodore Weiss and Alfred Yerke.

    The funeral will be Monday from the Miller Bean Funeral Home Inc., 436 Cedar Ave., with Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's of the Assumption Church, South Scranton. Entombment, Cathedral Cemetery.

    Friends may call Sunday, 3 to 6 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
