
Marian Spitzer Robling

Marian Spitzer Robling, a resident of Green Ridge, Lake Winola and West Palm Beach, Florida areas for many years, died Thursday evening at the Dunmore Health Care Center after a brief illness. She and her husband, J. Gerald Robling, celebrated their fifty-second wedding anniversary in July. They were married at St. Mary's Assumption Church, South Scranton by Monsignor George Demuth, a cousin to Mr. Robling.
Born in Scranton, daughter of the late Edward J. and Madelaine Geiger Spitzer, she was educated in the Scranton Public Schools. A graduate of Marywood College with a B.S. in Business Education, she went on to earn an M.A. in Business from Columbia University. She continued doing graduate studies at Pennsylvania State University, University of Scranton, University of Pittsburgh and Shippensburg State College.
Certified in elementary education, all commercial subjects, and as a guidance counselor and psychological examiner, Mrs. Robling rose through the teaching ranks to become Supervisor of Guidance, Communications and Business Education in the Scranton School District, a position she held for twenty-three years, until she retired in 1989. Prior to joining the Scranton School District in 1948, Mrs. Robling taught at Laurel College, Meriden, Connecticut, Barrett High School, Cresco, PA, and Edison Jr. High School, Summit, New Jersey.
Her business experience included Secretary of Community Welfare Association, Meriden, Connecticut, Secretary to Patent Attorney at American Cyanamid Research Laboratory, Stamford, Connecticut, and Assistant Club Director of the U.S.O. for Florida, Georgia and Virginia.
Mrs. Robling, well-known in the Education Community, was active in the Chamber of Commerce serving on the Education Committee. She became a Board Member for the Lackawanna County Mental Health Association in 1967 and in 1975 organized the Lackawanna County Area Epilepsy Foundation. She was a former member of the Business Education Advisory Committee at Wilkes College, a member of the Scranton Club Ladies Auxiliary Association, and for many years a very active member of the Century Club of Scranton, serving as President from 1986-1988.
Continuing her love for education, Mrs. Robling held membership in the following professional organizations serving as president for several of them: PA Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development, PA Business Eduaction Association, Eastern Business Education Association, National Business Education Association, PA School Counselors Association, Guidance and Personnel Association of Northeastern Pennsylvania, American Association of University Women, Life Member of the National Education Association, PA State Education Association, Scranton Education Association, KAPPA DELTA PI- Kappa Chapter, DELTA PI EPSION- Tau Chapter, DELTA KAPPA GAMMA- Mu Chapter, Scranton Women Teachers' Club, Who's Who in American Women, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who Biographical Record- School District Officials, and Notable Americans of the Bicentennial Era.
Mrs. Robling cared deeply about her students and continued to follow their careers long after their graduation from high school. She was most proud of helping her students qualify for the nurses scholarships offered through the Century Club and she continued to work on this committee long after her retirement.
She is also survived by several cousins.
The funeral will be Monday at 9:30 a.m. from the Miller Bean Funeral Home, 436 Cedar Avenue with mass at 10: a.m. at St. Mary's Assumption Church, 430 River Street, South Scranton. Interment, St. Catherine's Cemetery, Elmhurst.
