Michael P. DeStefano, 86, a lifelong resident of Scranton, died early Wednesday morning in the VNA Hospice Inpatient Unit at Moses Taylor Hospital after a lengthy illness. He and his wife, the former Matilda Costa, celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary Jan. 26, 2004.
Born in Scranton, son of the late Stephen and Theresa Amandalero DeStefano, he was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Church. A Marine Corps veteran of World War II, he served as a sergeant aboard the USS Ticonderoga in the Pacific theater. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans. Prior to retirement, he was employed by Chamberlain Manufacturing Corp.
He was a loving husband and father.
Also surviving are a daughter, Janis DeStefano, Phillipsburg; two sisters, Katherine Corazzini, Scranton, and Carmella Coviello, Arizona; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Rose Colizzo and Ann Bidwell, and a brother, Vincent.
The funeral will be Friday at 9 a.m. from the Miller Bean Funeral Home Inc., 436 Cedar Ave., with Mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. Francis of Assisi Church, 630 Genet St. Interment, Italian American Cemetery, Scranton.
