
Martha E. Ashman

Martha E. Ashman, 84, a lifelong Scranton resident, died Tuesday morning at Mountain View Care Center after an illness. She was the widow of James Ashman, who died June 28, 1970.
Born and raised on Hickory Street in Scranton, daughter of the late John and Selma Weinz Etter, she was a graduate of Lackawanna Business College, a member of Hickory Street Presbyterian Church, the Women of Hickory and the Humane Society of Lackawanna County. Prior to her retirement, she was employed as a bookkeeper for Penn Auto Supply Co.
She was a very loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, who possessed a quiet strength that was admired by all who knew her. She spent many hours making creative masterpieces through needlework, crocheting and knitting. She enjoyed playing bingo with friends. Although she never sat behind the wheel, she loved NASCAR. She will be missed by all.
Surviving are two sons, James J. and his wife, Ginny, Greenfield Township; and Charles W. and his wife, Julann, Binghamton, N.Y.; two daughters, Ann J. Carpenter, Binghamton; and Selma M. Raieski, Netherlands; a sister, Lena Raypole, Clyde, Ohio; 11 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandchild, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Selma Hummer; and six brothers, John, Walter, Alfred, William, Carl and Ernie.
The funeral will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in the Miller Bean Funeral Home Inc., 436 Cedar Ave., with services by the Rev. Tom H. Collins, pastor, Hickory Street Presbyterian Church. Interment, Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst.
