Russell J. Sillner

    Russell J. "Buckles" Sillner, 87, a lifelong resident of the East Mountain section, died Friday evening in the Community Medical Center VNA Hospice unit after an illness. He and his wife, the former Gladyce Smith, celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary May 19.

    Born in Scranton, son of the late John and Elizabeth Maida Lucke Sillner, he attended St. Mary of the Assumption School and was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Army in the European Theatre and the Battle of the Bulge. He was a member of the First Church of God, an usher, and a former member of its board of trustees. Prior to retirement, he was self-employed as a master plumber in the city of Scranton.

    He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a big fan of the Philadelphia Phillies.

    Also surviving are a son, John J., and his wife Ellen, Scranton; a granddaughter, Jesika Sillner, Scranton; a grandson, Justin John Sillner, Scranton; nieces, nephews, and cousins.

    He was preceded in death by two brothers, Clarence and Willard.

    The funeral will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the First Church of God, 101 Center St., Taylor, with services by the Rev. Douglas Hoeffner, pastor of the First Church of God, Taylor. Interment, Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst.

    Friends may call Monday, 4 to 8 p.m. in the Miller Bean Funeral Home Inc., 436 Cedar Ave., and Tuesday, 9:30 until time of the service in the First Church of God, Taylor. Those attending the services are asked to go directly to the church.
