Joseph J. Birtel, 71, a longtime resident of Roaring Brook Township, died Tuesday morning at home after a courageous battle with cancer. He and his wife, the former Joan E. Purdon, celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary on Oct. 10.
Born in Scranton, son of the late John Joseph and Martha Krieger Birtel, he was a graduate of St. Mary of the Assumption High School and a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Church. He was a Navy veteran, serving during the Korean War. He was a truck driver for 34 years employed by Arrow Carrier Corp. and retired from New Penn Motor Express Inc.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and all outdoor activities. He was a master and jack of all trades, and he enjoyed sharing his knowledge and teaching his children. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.
Also surviving are a son, Joseph J., Scranton; a daughter, Susan Belvedere and her husband Dan, Susquehanna; two grandchildren, Brandyn and Justin Belvedere, Susquehanna; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert.
The funeral will be Saturday from the Miller Bean Funeral Home Inc., 436 Cedar Ave., with Mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. Mary of the Assumption Church., 430 River St. Entombment, Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst.
