Gerard E. Stahl, 87, a longtime resident of Scranton, died Friday evening at home. He was the widow of the former Ruth Lonsdorf, they were married 47 years at the time of her death November 16, 1987.
He was born in Scranton, the son of the late Leo and Anna Spitzer Stahl. He was a graduate of Honesdale Catholic High School, a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Church, a Veteran of WW II serving from 1943 to 1945 with the US Air Corp as a pilot and a member of the Fraternal Order of Police. He always possessed a strong work ethic, working several jobs to support his 6 children. He was a member of the Scranton Police Department from 1948 until his retirement in 1971 and the founder of Stalls by Stahl Specialty Painting. In his retirement years he traveled extensively through the United States. He was an avid gardener who enjoyed the outdoors and he loved spending time with his family.
Surviving are 5 sons, Thomas and his wife Natalie, Peckville, Dr. Michael and his wife Barbara, Knoxville, TN, William and his wife Pamela, Factoryville, James and his wife Elaine, Scranton, Gregory and his wife Rochelle, Moscow; a daughter Dr. Mary and her husband Dr. Donald Levick, Allentown; 2 brothers, Joseph, TX and Robert, California; 2 sisters, Estelle Huffert, Colorado and Rita Stahl, Scranton; 15 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Adrian and 2 sisters, Marie Henderson, and Catherine O’Connor.
The Funeral will be Monday from the Miller Bean Funeral Home, Inc., 436 Cedar Avenue, with Mass at 10:00 a.m. in St. Mary’s of the Assumption Church, 430 River Street. Interment will be held private in the parish cemetery. Friends may call Sunday 5 to 8p.m. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made in his memory to the American Heart Association, 730 Pittston Avenue, Scranton, PA 18505-4103, or to St. Mary’s of the Assumption Church, 430 Pittston Avenue, Scranton, PA 18505-1189.
