Fred W. Griffin, 78, a resident of Dunmore, died Wednesday morning in the Moses Taylor Hospital VNA Hospice inpatient unit, after a lengthy illness. His wife the former Alta Mae Cramer died September 20, 1987.
He was born and raised in Nicholson, the son of Edwin and
Alice Quick Griffin. A graduate of Nicholson High School and a veteran of WW II
serving as a radio man with the US Navy in the South Pacific. He was active in
the Northeast theater, the Sierra Club and the Lackawanna County Bicycle Club.
In 1998 he rode his bicycle across the country to raise money for the American
Lung Association. Prior to his retirement he was a manager for Sugerman’s in the
clothing department. The last 20 years he worked as a brail transcriber,
translating text books into brail for students of all ages.
Surviving is a daughter, Leona Griffin, Dunmore, 2 sons, Mark
and Ned, both of Dunmore, a brother, Walter, Nicholson; nieces, nephews and
cousins.
He was preceded in death by a daughter Marcy, May 21, 1962; a
son, Matthew Griffin, November 8, 2002 and a sister, Ruth DeRemer.
Private Funeral Services and Interment will be held at the
convenience of the family.
The family will greet friends Monday 6 to 9 p.m. in the
Miller Bean Funeral Home, Inc. 436 Cedar Avenue, Scranton. Memorial
