Robert T. "Dutchie" Dundon
July 31, 2005
Robert T. “Dutchie” Dundon, 78, a longtime resident of Dunmore, died
unexpectedly Sunday evening in the Community medical Center, shortly after being
stricken ill at home. His wife is the former Marion Evans and they celebrated 61
years of marriage June 14, 2005.
He was born & raised in South Scranton, the son of the late
Thomas J. and Frances C. Kohl Dundon. He attended St. Mary’s of the Assumption
School and joined the U. S. Navy at the age of 16, against his mother’s wishes.
He served in the Pacific Theater during World War II as a gunner aboard the
U.S.S. Shannon, a destroyer which was the first ship into Japan after their
surrender. He participated in the battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa, received two
Bronze Stars, the Pacific Theater Ribbon, the American Theater Ribbon and the
Victory Medal. He owned and operated Dundon’s Service Stations that served the
greater Scranton area for over 50 years and were very well known for the best
service at a reasonable price. They were known landmarks by locals and those
traveling to the area when giving directions or as a place to meet. As time went
by and the difficulties of operating a small business kept increasing, what kept
Bob at it were his customers. He took great pride in providing services that
were a notch above anywhere else in the area and could carry on a conversation
with the customer worth millions of dollars as well as the one who had to pay $5
a week on his bill.
Bob relished the time he got to spend with his grandchildren,
especially his great grandson, Gavin Michael Dundon, who he liked showing off to
and meeting his customers. He was his pride and joy.
Also surviving are a son, David Dundon and his wife Theresa,
Dunmore; 2 sisters, Marie E. Smith, Moscow, Betty Kramer, Scranton; a brother,
Joseph J. Dundon, Elkton, FL; 2 granddaughters, Theresa Ann Friedman and her
husband Josh, West Chester; Tara Dundon, Dunmore; a great grandson, Gavin
Michael Dundon, Dunmore; several nieces and nephews.

Home, Inc., 436 Cedar Avenue, with Mass at 9:30 a.m. in Nativity of Our Lord
Church, 633 Orchard Street. Interment, Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst.
