Leonard T. Spohrer, 83, a longtime resident of Scranton, died Wednesday evening in the Jewish Home, after an illness.
He was born in Scranton, the son of the late George F. and Teresa Lentes Spohrer. He was a member of St. Mary’s of the Assumption Church, a graduate of Scranton Technical High School and the Milwaukee School of Engineering. His training for the US Navy was done in The Great Lakes Naval Training Center, Illinois and after training he was stationed on the U.S.S. Maumee as a Motor Machinist’s Mate Second Class during WW II. The Maumee was the first surface ship in the U.S. Navy to be powered by diesel engines. He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Rabiega-Gorgol Post #3451, Scranton. After his military service he was employed as an engineer for many years for the City of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, water company.
Surviving are 3 sisters, Edna Saynuk, Baltimore, MD, Agnes Moretz, Harrisburg, Helen G. Spohrer, Scranton; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by four sisters, Irene Sharek, Marie and Theresa Spohrer, who were twins, Loretta Chase; two brothers, George and Edward.
The funeral will be Saturday with Mass and Committal Service at 11 a.m. in St. Mary’s of the Assumption Church, 430 River Street. Interment will be private in the Parish Cemetery.
