Madeline Hudson Williams, 96, a longtime resident of Scranton, died Monday morning in the Abington Manor Nursing Home after an illness. She was the widow of Francis E. Williams, who died March 16, 1989.
She was born in Adamsville, Alabama, the daughter of the late
Mr. and Mrs. Hudson. She attended Central High School and was a member of the
Bethel AME Church, the women of Bethel, and was retired Superintendent of the
Sunday School. Prior to retirement she had been employed as a cook for the Head
Start Preschool Program in Scranton.
Let not your heart be troubled, Madeline Hudson Williams was
a warrior who fought a long battle for 96 years. We were blessed to have had her
with us. But she is gone physically, not in our thoughts and hearts. She was one
in a million and has gone on to a well deserved rest. Now sleep Madeline, sleep,
you are free at last. We love for what you have left us with, so much.
Surviving is a daughter, Thelma Santiago Phillips and a son
Curtis E. Williams, both of New Britain, CT; a brother, Walter Smith, Daytona,
FL; a cousin, Valeria Little, Scranton; 13 Grandchildren, 26 great
grandchildren, 12 great great grandchild, and a host of many nieces & nephews.
She was preceded in death by 4 children, Carolyn Shaw,
Reuben, Francis and Erwin Williams; and a granddaughter, Dawn Shaw.
The funeral will be Saturday with Services at 11:00 a.m. in
the Bethel AME Church, 716 North Washington Avenue, Scranton, by the Reverend
Andrew Newberry, pastor of Bethel AME Church. Interment, Fairview Memorial Park,
Elmhurst.
Friends may call Friday 6 to 8 p.m. in the Miller Bean
Funeral Home, Inc., 436 Cedar Avenue and on Saturday 10 until 11 a.m. in the
Bethel AME Church, 716 North Washington Avenue.
