Ruth A. Cassidy, 84, a lifelong resident of South Scranton died early Sunday morning in the Moses Taylor Hospital, after a brief illness. She was the widow of James W. Cassidy who died October 10, 1979.
She was born in Scranton, the daughter of the late Joseph Carroll and the late Stella Rhodes Carroll Melville. She was a member of St. John The Evangelist Church, a volunteer for the American Red Cross Blood Bank and a member of the South Scranton Senior Center.
She was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and aunt. She enjoyed her grandchildren and great grandchildren, was an avid bingo player and had a quick Irish wit.
She is survived by a daughter, Kathleen Merrifield and her husband Charles "Willie" Merrifield, Scranton; a son, James Cassidy, Scranton; 2 sisters, Grace Newhart, Scranton and Theresa Judge, Dunmore; 3 granddaughters, Beth Brown, Moosic, Lisa M. Merrifield, Scranton, Lori Cassidy, Wilkes-Barre; 2 grandsons, Charles "Chuck" Merrifield, Scranton, James Cassidy, Wilkes-Barre; 6 great grandchildren, Amanda Zieminski, Kaylee Murray, Briona Merrifield, Jimmy Brown, Bridgette Brown and Lilly Merrifield; many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph "Bud" Carroll and a sister Dorothy Kelly.
The funeral will be Wednesday from the Miller Bean Funeral Home, Inc., 436 Cedar Avenue, with Mass at 10 a.m. in St. John The Evangelist Church, 1501 Pittston Avenue. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery.
