Joan M. Murray, 72, a resident of Ransom Township for the past 10 years, formerly of Denville NJ for 30 years, died late Tuesday evening, surrounded by her family, in the Mercy Hospital, after a brief illnesses. She and her husband William J. Murray would have would have celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary on October 18th.
She was born in Ransom Township, the daughter of the late Joseph and Catherine Powell Luby and a graduate of Scranton Technical High School. While living in Denville NJ she was a volunteer at St. Claire's Hospital, a member of St. Mary's Church, and was employed by the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company as a checker. While living in Ransom Township she was a member of St. David's Church, West Scranton, a member of the Legion of Mary at St. Patrick's Church, a faithful St. Ann's Basilica follower and attended the Novena's. She was a devoted first Friday receiver for many years and an active volunteer for Pro Life Pennsylvanians for human life.
She had a strong devotion to her catholic faith, was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt who loved her family and especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.
Also surviving are two sons, William C. Murray and his wife Karrie D., Flanders, NJ, James J. Murray and his wife Kathleen, Rockaway, NJ; two brothers, Joseph Luby, Scranton, and James Luby, Moscow; a sister, Evelyn Eisele, Peckville; 4 grandchildren; Justin D. Murray, Jessica S. Murray, Devin Murray and Sean Murray, several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Marie Heisler.
The funeral will be Monday from the Miller Bean Funeral Home, Inc., 436 Cedar Avenue, Scranton, with Mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. David's Church, 2523 Jackson Street, Scranton, PA. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton.
