Donald J. Kanavy

    Donald J. Kanavy, a resident of the East Mountain section of Scranton died early Friday morning in the Mercy Hospital after a lengthy illness. His wife is the former Jeanne Reill.

    He was born in Scranton, the son of the late Paul and Mary McHugh Kanavy, a graduate of South Scranton Catholic High School, a veteran of the United States Marines Corps, a member of Holy Name of Jesus Church and of the Teamsters Union, Scranton Local #229. Prior to retirement he was employed as a mechanic for the Scranton Sewer Authority.

    He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, nephew, uncle and cousin, who will be dearly missed by all. He was proud of his Irish heritage, enjoyed working in the yard and spending time with his grandchildren.

    Also surviving, a daughter Mary Jeanne Kanavy and her husband Ira Wittenstein, Jacksonville, FL; a son Don J. Kanavy Jr. and his wife Laura, Archbald; a sister Mari Ann Black and her husband Gary, Lake Ariel; an uncle Joe Gerrity, Scranton; five grandchildren, Jacob, Mitchell, Julia, Karly and Nicholas; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

    He was preceded in death by a brother Paul Kanavy; a son, Steven Kanavy and an infant daughter, Paula.

    The funeral will be Monday from the Miller Bean Funeral Home, Inc., 436 Cedar Avenue with mass at 10 a.m. in the Holy Name of Jesus Church at the corner of East Elm Street and Froude Avenue. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery.

    Friends may call Sunday 5 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions can be made in his memory to the donors favorite charity.
