Marie Shaffer, 90, a lifelong resident of Scranton, died Wednesday afternoon at the Beverly Health Care Center were she had been a resident for the past month. She was the widow of Mark W. Shaffer who died March 29, 1971.
She was born in Scranton, the daughter of the late George and Philipina Schmidt Klassner. She was a member of St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church, the past president of the Lutheran Church Women’s group, a member of the Altar Guild and the L.W.S. (Lutheran Welfare Service Auxiliary). She retired from the University of Scranton and prior to that had been employed for 23 years by Parker Textile, Inc.
She was know affectionately as “Aunt” Marie by many and celebrated her 90th birthday this past January with a special gathering of her many nieces, nephews and special friends. She enjoyed watching her Soaps on television, reading romance novels and doing word search puzzles. She loved to dance and for many years played cards weekly with her friends in Dunmore.
Surviving are many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews.
She was preceded in death by four sisters, Lydia Harvey, Clara Petras, Anna Perry and Cornelia Bell; two brothers Frank Klassner and George Klassner.
The funeral will be Saturday with Funeral Services at 11 a.m. in St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1000 Taylor Avenue, by the Pastor, Reverend David A. Searing and the Rev. Kenneth M. Trexler. Interment, Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst.
The family will greet friends in the church Saturday 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Memorial contributions can be made in her memory to St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1000 Taylor Avenue, Scranton, PA 18510-1350.
