Jay F. Staples

    Jay F. Staples, a resident of Scott Township, died Thursday morning in the Mercy Hospital. His widow is the former Lorraine Smoley.

    He was born in Scranton, the son of the Henry Staples, Scranton and the late Violet E. Shotwell Staples. He was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School, the Johnson School of Technology, a lifetime member of the NRA, a member of Ducks Unlimited and Union Lodge #291 of the F. & A. M.. He was employed as a Deputy Sheriff for the Lackawanna County Sheriff’s Department, vice president of the Lackawanna County Sheriffs Association, a former Constable of Roaring Brook Township, was the range qualifications officer and a member of the mounted police unit.

    He was a loving son, husband, father and grandfather who will be missed. He was an avid outdoors man who loved hunting, fishing, target shooting and horseback riding.

    Also surviving are three sons, Paul Staples and his wife Corinne, Clarks Summit, David Staples and his wife Jennifer, Moscow, Steven Staples, Scranton; two sisters, Susan Carpentier and Jill Stahl, both of Scranton; three grandchildren, Devin Cottrell, Jeremy Staples and Joshua Staples, nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts and cousins.

    The funeral services will be Monday at 9 a.m. in Miller Bean Funeral Home, Inc., 436 Cedar Avenue. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.

    The family will greet friends on Sunday 1 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m.
