Dr. Joseph E. Moylan, a resident of Scranton, died early Friday evening at home after a lengthy illness. He and his wife the former Ruth Farber observed their 60th wedding anniversary in April.
He was born in Wilkes-Barre, the son of the late Joseph and Elizabeth Ernst Moylan. He was a lifelong member of the Church of Nativity, a graduate of Central High School, the University of Scranton and Temple University School of Medicine. He served his internship at Scranton State Hospital and a residency in internal medicine at Emory University Hospital, Atlanta, GA. He served with the US Army Medical Corps in WW II and was honorably discharged with the rank of Captain. He was a member of the American Legion, Davis-Wainwright-Gibbons Post #187, Olyphant, the Moosic Lakes Club and the Purple Club. Doctor was a member of the staffs of Mercy Hospital, Community Medical Center, the former St. Mary’s Hospital and the Scranton State Hospital. In 1995 he was honored for his 50 years of service to the community by the Lackawanna County Medical Society, The Pennsylvania Medical Society and Mayor James Connors. He was also, given an award from Mercy Health System Northeast region, for fifty years of meritorious service. He had been a member of the American, Pennsylvania and Lackawanna County Medical Societies, Phi Rho Sigma Medical Fraternity.
Dr. Moylan practiced family medicine in South Scranton for over fifty years and was highly regarded by his patients and fellow physicians. He was a caring, quiet, compassionate man and doctor, devoted to his family and generations of his patients.
Also surviving are a son, Joseph, Scranton; a daughter, Jane Sullivan and her husband Tim, a granddaughter, Meghan Sullivan, all of Fox Chapel; a brother, Robert F. Moylan, Scranton; a sister in law, Maria Farber, a niece, Eileen Farber Bonk and husband Richard; a nephew Wayne Farber and wife Shirley; a grand niece and two grand nephews, several cousins.
He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Thomas Moylan, April 25, 2001 and a brother in law William Farber April 1, 2002.
The funeral will be private at the convenience of the family, Interment Dunmore Cemetery, Dunmore. There will be no public calling hours. A memorial Mass will be celebrated Saturday, December 9, 2006 in Nativity of Our lord Church, 633 Orchard Street, Scranton.
