Frederick Carl "Fred" Gaus Sr., a longtime resident of Mount Cobb, Jefferson Township, died Thursday morning at home after a brief illness. He and his wife the former Joyce James celebrated their 33rd wedding anniversary November 17th. His first wife the former Dorothy Marie Beemer died January 12, 1972.
He was born in Scranton, the son of the late Carl Frederick and Helen Birtell Gaus. He was a very active member of the Centenary United Methodist Church in Hamlin, co-founder and past president of their men's group. He attended South Scranton High School and graduated from Johnson Technical School. He was a veteran of WWII serving as a BAR with the 83rd Division of the US Army. He was in the Normandy and Northern France campaigns and was wounded in action in France in 1944, he received the American Theater medal, the WW II Victory medal, the Bronze Star, the Good Conduct medal and Bronze Battle Stars for campaigns Normandy and Northern France, the European-African-Middle Eastern campaign ribbon, the Combat Infantry Badge. He was past commander of the Thomas Snook VFW, Post #6520, Cortez, 2002 Grand Marshall of the Jefferson Township Fireman's Parade, a proud member of the Veterans Center, Scranton. Prior to retirement he was self employed as a carpenter and a 40 year member of the Carpenters Union Local 645, Scranton.
Also surviving are four sons, Frederick C. Jr., Mount Cobb, David W., Elmhurst, James A., Sr., Deer Park, TX, Thomas Roman, Mount Cobb; two daughters, Dorothy Marie Rinker, Daleville, Dawn Marie Walters, Lake Ariel; fifteen grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren; five brothers, George Sr., New Port Richey, FL, Howard, Burlington, NJ, Earl Sr., Gouldsboro, Frank Sr., Tunkhannock and Edwin, Clarks Summit; five sisters, Evelyn Reitz, Etters, Ethel Parry, Scranton, Carol Parry, Scranton, Helen Gaus, Elmhurst, Sharon Bittenbender, Dickson City; twenty-three God Children, many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a daughter Mary Ann; a sister Ruth Bosack; two brothers, Carl Jr., and Harold A., Sr.
The funeral will be Monday at 10 a.m. in the Centenary United Methodist Church in Hamlin, Route 590, Hamlin, with Services by the Reverend Ronald W. Onder, Pastor. Interment, Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst.
Family and friends attending the funeral services on Monday are asked to go directly to the church.
Friends may call Sunday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the Miller Bean Funeral Home, Inc., 436 Cedar Avenue, Scranton and Monday 9 to 10 a.m. in the Centenary United Methodist Church in Hamlin, Route 590.
