Reverend Robert P. Arnold, Pastor of Saint Lawrence O'Toole and Saint Stanislaus Churches, Old Forge, died suddenly on Tuesday, May 15, 2007, at home.
Father Arnold, son of the late John J. and Frances Trapper Arnold, was born in Scranton on July 28, 1946. He received his early schooling at Saint Mary's Assumption Elementary School, and was a graduate of Bishop Klonowski High School, Scranton. He attended the University of Scranton and Pope John XXIII National Seminary in Weston, Massachusetts, where he completed his studies for the priesthood. Father Arnold was ordained to the priesthood on May 3, 1975, in Saint Peter's Cathedral, Scranton, by the Most Reverend J. Carroll McCormick, D.D., late Bishop of Scranton.
Father Arnold's first assignment was as assistant director of Camp Saint Andrew, Tunkhannock in the summer of 1975. He was then appointed assistant pastor at Saint Patrick's Church, Scranton in September. He served as the Director of Saint Michael's School for Boys, Tunkhannock, from May 27, 1980 until September 30, 1988. His first pastorate was assigned during that period at the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Tunkhannock, on September 4, 1985. Father Arnold was appointed pastor of Sacred Heart Church in Luzerne in July, 1973 and then, in addition as pastor of St. Ann and St. John Nepomucene Churches, Luzerne in 1995, serving the three parishes until his appointment as pastor of the Church of Saint Rita, Gouldsboro on July 5, 2001. Father Arnold was also appointed administrator of the Church of Saint Ann in Tobyhanna before being appointed pastor of Saint Lawrence O'Toole and Saint Stanislaus Churches in Old Forge on July 6, 2006.
Father Arnold served as a member of the Administrative Board of Camp Saint Andrew, Tunkhannock and as Chaplain for the Knights of Columbus, Assumpta Council #3987, in Luzerne, PA.
He is survived by a brother, John J. Arnold, Scranton and a niece, Lori Ann Witkowich, Saratoga, N.Y.
Viewing will take place at Saint Lawrence O'Toole Church, 620 Main Street, Old Forge, on Friday, May 18, 2007, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. A Vigil Mass will be celebrated at Saint Lawrence O'Toole Church, Old Forge, at 7:00 p.m., with the Monsignor Michael J. Delaney, Dean, presiding.
A Pontifical Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Most Reverend John M. Dougherty, D.D., Auxiliary Bishop of Scranton, on Saturday, May 19, 2007, at 11:00 a.m. in Saint Lawrence O'Toole Church, Old Forge. Viewing will also take place Saturday morning, prior to the 11:00 a.m. Funeral Mass. Interment will be in Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton.
