Carl Leyh, 79, a lifelong resident of South Scranton, died shortly after arrival, Saturday morning at the Moses Taylor Hospital. He and his wife the former Gladys Teske celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary May 6th.
He was born in Scranton, November 20, 1927, the son of the late John and Barbara Gebhardt Leyh. He was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School Class of 1945, a member of the Elm Park United Methodist Church. He was very active in the church and especially enjoyed volunteering at the church and the annual apple pie making fundraiser. He was a veteran of WW II serving with the United States Army, a member of the Willow Indians and a former member of the Masons. Prior to retirement he was a member of the Local 44 Sheet Metal Workers Union.
He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who had a wonderful sense of humor and always enjoyed a good joke . He will be missed by all. He was an avid outdoors man, who in earlier years enjoyed hunting and fishing. He loved working in his garden and took pride in his flowers, most especially his roses. He enjoyed daily walks with his wife Gladys at Lake Scranton and the mall, and was an avid Penn State football fan.
Also surviving are a son, Todd Leyh and his wife Cathy, Scranton; a daughter, Robin Rushworth and her husband Charles, Chesapeake, VA; a granddaughter, Caitlin Rushworth, Chesapeake, VA; a sister in law, Ruth Leyh, Wilmington, DE; a brother in law, Roger Teske and his wife Christine, Scranton; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Harold Leyh, Robert Leyh and John "Dutch" Leyh; two sisters, Helen Buttner and Jessie Neiger.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. in the Cyrus Jones Memorial Chapel at Elm Park United Methodist Church, 712 Linden Street, with services by the Rev. Virginia E. O'Malley, pastor of Elm Park United Methodist Church. Interment, Abington Hills Cemetery, South Abington Township. Those attending the funeral service are asked to go directly to the church.
Friends may call on Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Miller Bean Funeral Hone, Inc., 436 Cedar Avenue. Memorial contributions can be made in his memory to the Elm Park United Methodist Church, 712 Linden Street, Scranton, PA 18510-2440.
