Harry W. Steier

    Harry Weber Steier, 92, a lifelong resident of Scranton, died Wednesday morning in the Moses Taylor Hospital after a brief illness. He and his wife, the former Ruth Hartman, celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary on June 15th.

    He was born in Scranton, the son of the late Jacob and Hannah Weber Steier. He was a member of the Hickory Street Presbyterian Church, an ordained Elder and Deacon. He attended Scranton Technical High School, the Wharton School of Business, the University of Scranton and Lackawanna Business College. From 1931 until 1951 he was employed by the Scranton Life Insurance Company and from 1951 until his retirement in 1979 he was an officer of the Northeastern Bank of PA.

    He was an active golfer and bowler, He was a prominent amateur local baseball player known as "Lefty", he played with Clarks Summit in the old Abington League. He managed Basketball at the YMCA and was one of the managers for the Hickory Street Presbyterian Church basketball team the Black Knights. In the 1950's he managed South Scranton Little League Team.

    He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and uncle, who was respected by all that knew him from work and his personal life. He will be greatly missed. He was an extremely loving man.

    Also surviving is a son, Harry R. Steier and his wife Jeanne Marie, Clarks Summit; a grandson, Daniel J. Steier and his wife Susan, West Scranton; 3 great grandchildren, Johannah, Josiah and Benjamin Daniel; nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

    He was preceded in death by a brother, Lawrence Steier.

    The funeral will be Saturday with services at 11 a.m. in the Hickory Street Presbyterian Church, 437 Hickory Street, with Services by Rev. Tom H. Collins, pastor of Hickory Street Presbyterian Church. Interment, Dunmore Cemetery, Dunmore. Those attending the funeral service are asked to go directly to the church.

    Friends may call on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Miller Bean Funeral Home, Inc., 436 Cedar Avenue. Memorial Contributions can be made in her memory to the Hickory Street Presbyterian Church, 435 Hickory Street, Scranton, PA 18505-1113.
