John E. Brier

    John E. Brier, 91, a resident of Clifton Township, formerly of South Scranton, died early Thursday morning in the VNA Inpatient Unit at Community Medical Center. He was the widow of the former Ann Marie Ryan, who died on January 30, 1989.

    He was born in Stroudsburg on November 14, 1915, the son of the late Michael J. and Nora Conway Brier. A member of St. Rita's Church, Gouldsboro. He was a graduate of Saint Mary's High School Class of 1934 and began his employment with Wilson & Co. Inc., in July of 1934. He became manager of their Wilkes-Barre branch in 1955 and retired as manager of their Scranton branch in 1978.

    He was an avid swimmer, swimming one half mile, five days a week at the YMCA until January of this year. He loved golf and was a member of the Nativity Golf League.

    The family wishes to express their gratitude to the VNA Hospice staff for their comforting care of their father and family members during this difficult time.

    Surviving four sons, Attorney Jack J. Brier, Dalton, James E. Brier and his wife Mildred, Clifton, Township, Gerard J. Brier and his wife Marie, West Palm Beach, FL, Attorney Michael E. Brier and his wife, the Honorable Trish Corbett, Moosic; three daughters, Ann Marie Schank and her husband Charles, Springbrook, Kathleen M. Granahan and her husband Dennis, Clifton Township, Rosemary Thyberg, Scranton; a daughter in law, Mary Ann Brier, Springbrook; a sister, Mary Regan, Scranton; twenty three grandchildren, thirty one great grandchildren, one great great grandchild; several nieces and nephews.

    He was preceded in death by three brothers, Joseph, Francis and James.

    The funeral will be Monday from the Miller Bean Funeral Home, Inc., 436 Cedar Avenue with Mass at 11:00 a.m. in St. Mary's of the Assumption Church. Interment, Parish cemetery.

    Friends may call Sunday 4 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made in his memory to the VNA Hospice of Lackawanna County, 301 Delaware Avenue, Olyphant, PA 18447-1531.
