Laurie Owens, 43, a lifelong resident of Scranton, died early Wednesday morning in the Hospice Community Care Inpatient Hospice Unit, Dunmore after a courageous four year battle with breast cancer.
She was born in Scranton, the daughter of Bruce J. and Marilyn E. Schadt Owens, Scranton. She was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School Class of 1983, a member of St. Matthews United Evangelical Lutheran Church and covered by prayers from the Pentecostal Assembly of God, Hamlin. She was an active participant in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. Prior to her illness she had been employed in the deli department at Price Chopper for 20 years, first at the Luzerne Street location and then at the Taylor Hill Location.
Laurie loved life and lived for her son Andrew. She greatly appreciated and loved her primary care giver, her mother Marilyn and had a great love of animals. The family would like to thank her faithful friends and angels Ellen, Theresa and Marie. They would also like to thank Dr. Mark Lyons, all the care givers at the Mercy Hospital Oncology Unit, the Community Medical Center, Hospice Community Care Inpatient Unit, Compassionate Care Home Care and the Hematology Oncology Associates of Northeastern PA.
Also surviving are a son Andrew Thomas Owens, at home; two sisters, Debra Coulon and her husband Mike, Scranton, Susan Lasota and her husband Julian, Lake Ariel; two brothers, Gary Owens and his wife Linda, Scranton, Brian Owens, Scranton; four nephews, Timothy Lasota, Daniel Lasota, Benjamin Lasota, Joshua Owens; a niece Tara Jordan; aunts, uncles and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents George and Hilda Harvey Schadt and paternal grandparents, William and Beatrice Thomas Owens.
Cremation services were held at the Maple Hill Crematory.
There will be a Memorial Service on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Miller Bean Funeral Home, Inc., 436 Cedar Avenue, with services by the by Reverend C. Lester Stephenson, Pastor of Saint Matthews United Evangelical Lutheran Church, assisted by the Rev. Gordon J. White, Pastor of the Pentecostal Assembly of God, Hamlin.
The family will greet friends Saturday 12 noon until 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made in her memory to the trust for the benefit of her son, Andrew Owens Trust Fund at PNC Bank, contributions can be made at any branch location.
