Mary A. Powell

    Mary A. Powell,78, a life long resident of Scranton, died late Monday evening, in the VNA Inpatient Hospice Unit at Community Medical Center, after a lengthy illness. She was the widow of local television pioneer Thomas F. Powell who died February 24, 2004.

    She was born in Scranton April 30, 1929, the daughter of the late Frank and Winifred Taylor Krayer. She was a member of Saint Paul's Church and a graduate of Scranton Technical High School Class of 1948. During high school she was a majorette along with her twin sister Anne. In the 1940's she worked as a model and the highlight of her career was when she and her twin sister Anne participated as guest celebrities at ceremonies marking the formal dedication of the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Airport in 1947. She and her sister Anne appeared in the Westinghouse television commercials advertising the company's new line of twin washer and dryer products.

    In 1948 while employed by WGBI radio on location at the Watres Armory and promoting the introduction of FM radio she met her husband Thomas F. Powell who was the News Director. She and her twin sister Anne were married in a double wedding ceremony on August 16, 1952. While her husband was president of the Associated Press Broadcasters, they took part of the first trans Atlantic cruise to Europe onboard the newly christened Queen Elizabeth II and spent six weeks traveling Europe. Over the years she and her husband met many dignitaries and celebrities. Among them Nelson Rockefeller, Bob Hope, Buzz Aldrin, Julie Andrews, Larry Holmes and Judy Garland. They also visited the White House several times and met many Presidents including Gerald Ford and Richard Nixon. In the 1980's she began taking art classes in drawing and painting at the University of Scranton and Marywood University. She began working full time as an artist and was most inspired by Vincent Van Gogh and Monet.

    She was a loving grandmother and one of her greatest joys was being with her grandchildren, another was being with her Yorkshire Terrier "Muffin". She was fond of and had an interest in fashion, art, theater, music and the stock market.

    Surviving are a daughter, Grace Powell, Pittston; two sisters, her identical twin, Anne Walsh, Scranton, Alice Hosko, St. Michael, MN; a brother, Charles Krayer, Scranton; four granddaughters, Mara McGinnis, New York City, NY, Shannon McGinnis, Honeoye Falls, NY, Tammi McGinnis, Rochester, NY, Molly Gathercole, Rochester, NY, three great grandchildren, Daniel, Maia and Ryan; nieces, nephews and cousins.

    The funeral will be Friday at 9:15 a.m. from the Miller Bean Funeral Home, Inc., 436 Cedar Avenue, with Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Saint Paul's Church, 1510 Penn Avenue. Interment Saint Catherine's Cemetery, Covington Township.

    Friends may call Thursday 4 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made in her memory to the Saint Gabriel Transitional Housing Program under the auspice of Catholic Social Services, 400 Wyoming Avenue Scranton, PA 18503-1272 or to the National Parkinson Foundation, Inc., 1501 NW 9th Avenue/Bob Hope Road, Miami, FL 33136-1494.
