Emma B. Haffner

    Emma B. Haffner, 94, a resident of Scranton, died early Saturday morning at home. She was the widow of Frederick H. Haffner, Sr., who died September 29, 1988.

    She was born December 12, 1912 in Hoboken, NJ, the daughter of the late Gustave and Emma Sauermann. She was a member of the Hickory Street Presbyterian Church, educated in Scranton Public Schools, a member of St. Vincent’s 1200 Senior Club and also a member of Melita-Coeur DeLion Commandery 17 Knights Templar, serving as past president. Prior to retirement she had been employed in the local garment industry.

    She enjoyed bus rides, to the many dinner theaters and especially to Atlantic City with her daughter in law. She was known for making her German potato salad for many events and enjoyed being with her family and friends. Especially with her grandchildren.

    The family would like to thank Traditional Home Health and Hospice of the Sacred Heart for all their kindness and the comfort they gave her.

    Surviving is a son, Frederick H. Haffner, Jr., and his wife Jean Marie, Scranton, with whom she resided and were her care givers; five grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, four great great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

    She was preceded in death by a daughter, Ruth Emma Updyke who died August 1960; a sister, Pauline Laughlin; two brothers, William Sauermann and Arthur Sauermann.

    The Funeral will be Wednesday with Services at 10:30 a.m. in the Miller Bean Funeral Home, Inc., 436 Cedar Avenue, by the Reverend Tom H. Collins, pastor of the Hickory Street Presbyterian Church. Interment, Abington Hills Cemetery, South Abington Township.

    Friends may call on Tuesday 4 to 8 p.m.. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions can be made in her memory to the Hickory Street Presbyterian Church, 435 Hickory Street, Scranton, PA 18505-1113 or to Hospice of the Sacred Heart, 600 Baltimore Drive, Wilkes Barre, PA 18702-7901.
