John J. Ryder

    John J. "Jack" Ryder, 84, a resident of the Gino Merli Veterans Center and a lifelong resident of Scranton died Sunday afternoon at the Moses Taylor Hospital. He was the widow of the former Margaret E. Gannon who died February 23, 2003.

    He was born in Scranton, the son of the late Daniel P. and Anne V. Duggan Ryder, a member of Holy Name of Jesus Church, a graduate of Scranton Central High School and attended Saint Anselm College, Manchester, NH. He served with the US Navy during WW II, was a member of the American Legion, Major Edward J. Poch Post #948, South Scranton, the Postal Workers Union, and a former member of the East Mountain Residents Association. Prior to retirement he had been employed by the United States Postal Service.

    He was a kind and gentle person who will be missed by his family and friends.

    Surviving is a sister, Jean Rosar, Scranton; a brother, Joseph Ryder, Scranton; several nieces and nephews, several great nieces and great nephews.

    He was preceded in death by two brothers, Attorney Richard Ryder and Thomas Ryder; a sister, Eileen F. Ryder.

    The funeral will be Friday with Mass and Committal Services at 9:30 a.m. in Holy Name of Jesus Church on the corner of East Elm Street and Froude Avenue. Those attending Mass are asked to go directly to the church. Interment will be private in St. Catherine's Cemetery, Covington Township.

    Friends may call on Thursday 4 to 7 p.m. in the Miller Bean Funeral Home, Inc., 436 Cedar Avenue. Memorial contributions can be made in his memory to the Gino Merli's Veteran Center, 401 Penn Avenue, Scranton PA 18503-1213 or to the donors favorite charity.
