Henry J. Derbin, 78, a resident of Olyphant, formerly of Dickson City, died Sunday morning in the VNA Hospice Inpatient Unit at Community Medical Center after a lengthy illness. He and his wife Joan Brown Kowalsky Derbin would have celebrated their 23rd wedding anniversary on June 30th.
He was born in West Scranton the son of the late Joseph and Mary Pietrowski Derbin. He was a member of St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church, Olyphant, a graduate of West Scranton High School, the University of Scranton were he received his Bachelors degree and a graduate of Marywood University were he received his Masters in Journalism. He served his country as a member of the United States Marine Corp, was a member of the American Legion, Post #655, Dickson City and the American Legion, Olyphant. Prior to retirement he was employed by Specialty Records and prior to his illness he worked as a greeter for Walmart.
The family would like to thank the nurses and care givers at CMC Hospital and the VNA Hospice Inpatient Unit at CMC for their kind and compassionate care.
Also surviving are two sons, Joseph Kowalsky and his wife Kathy, Wildwood, FL, Timothy Kowalsky, Forest City; a brother, Edward Derbin, Scranton and a sister Stell Davis, Bar Harbor, Maine; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, Sean Derbin; a brother, Frank Derbin; a sister Mary Ferikle.
The Funeral will be Thursday at 9:15 from the Miller Bean Funeral Home, Inc., 436 Cedar Avenue, with requiem services at 10 a.m. in St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church, Corner of East Lackawanna and Gravity Avenue, Olyphant, celebrated by the Very Rev. Vladimir Fetcho, parish priest of St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church. Interment, All Saints Cemetery, Peckville.
Friends may call on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m.. Parastas will be 4:00 pm.
