Leonard J. Lavelle Jr., 83, a lifelong resident of Scranton, died early Saturday morning in the Gino Merli Northeast Veterans Center. He and his wife the former Regina Cronkey celebrated their 61st Wedding anniversary October 12, 2007.

He was born in Scranton, the son of the late Leonard J. and Juel Snyder Lavelle Sr.. He was a lifelong member of St. Mary's of the Assumption Church and a graduate of Saint Mary's of the Assumption High School. He served with the US Navy during World War II. He was a member of the South Side Businessmen’s Bowling League and was their secretary for 58 years in which time he bowled two 300 games. Prior to retirement he was employed as a machinist at Conrail Railroad and the former Erie-Lackawanna and Lackawanna Railroads.

He traveled many times to South Bend Indiana to visit the Notre Dame College Campus and to attend the football games being as he was an avid fan of the Notre Dame football team. He was also an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox.

Also surviving are a daughter, Dr. Lorraine L. Kloss, of Greentown; two sons, Leonard J. Lavelle III and his wife Rosemary K., of Roaring Brook Township, Larry Lavelle and his wife Patricia, of Lake Sheridan; a sister, Marguerite Charters, of Scranton; seven grandchildren, Brian Kloss, Kristine Heery, Nadine Gannon, Maura Osborne, Karen Keeler, Daniel Lavelle and Michael Lavelle; six great grandchildren, Jack Heery, Quinn Heery, Ella Kloss, Abby Kloss, Joseph Osborne and Grace Osborne; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son in law, Robert Kloss.

The Funeral Mass will be Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. in St. Mary's of the Assumption Church, 430 River Street, Scranton. Those attending Mass are asked to go directly to the church. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family in St. Catherine's Cemetery, Covington Township.

Friends may call Tuesday 5 to 8 p.m. in the Miller Bean Funeral Home, Inc., 436 Cedar Avenue. The family requests that memorial contributions be made in his memory to the Gino Merli Northeast Veterans Center, 401 Penn Avenue, Scranton, PA 18503-1213.
