Dorothy Elizabeth Evans Price
February 18, 2009
Dorothy E. Price, 87, of Gaithersburg, Maryland, passed away on Wednesday,
February 18, 2009, at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland.
She
was born on May 30, 1921, in Scranton, the daughter of the late Harry M. and
Florence Cecilia Evans. She was a
graduate of Scranton Central High School, Class of 1939.
She worked for the Scranton Electric Company and the local draft board.
To supplement her income, she ran her own retail clothing business while
holding part-time jobs at Sears Roebuck and the neighborhood grocery store.
A 1946 marriage to Girard G. Price of Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania, was
followed by the birth of her only child, Sharon M. Mastroni.
The family relocated briefly to Lorrain, Ohio, in 1948 before returning
to Scranton for a year and then finally moving to the Washington, DC
metropolitan area in 1950. After her
marriage ended in divorce, she worked in the mortgage department of B.F. Saul
Company for 17 years and was then employed by the Recreation Department of
Montgomery County, Maryland. She
also served as recording secretary for the Montgomery County Council.
Although she had lived away from the area for more than 50 years, she still
considered Scranton home. A large
extended family comprised of sixteen aunts and uncles, and their children, drew
her back for visits and special occasions.
She cherished all the wonderful memories of her childhood growing up in
Scranton; ice cream at Burschel’s Dairy, chasing the fire trucks her father
drove for the City of Scranton
Engine Company on North Main Avenue, Old Forge pizza, trips on the Laurel Line
to see relatives in Wilkes-Barre and Bear Creek, family reunions at Nay Aug Park
(and, of course, the zoo with Queenie and Tillie), rides and games at Rocky
Glen, taking the trolley for shopping at The Globe and the Scranton Dry Goods
Company, lunches at the Overbrook Tavern, novenas at St. Ann’s, Mineo’s pies,
quick meals at George’s Restaurant on Pittston Avenue, faggots and clam chowder
soup at spring church events, and her great childhood friendships which lasted a
lifetime.
She
loved to dance and listen to music in her spare time and shared her time with
various organizations; the Kiwanis Club of Montgomery Village, Maryland, local
Girl and Boy Scout troops, the gift shop at National Presbyterian Church, and
she organized several clothing and supply drives for a summer camp for children
with cancer.
A
devoted mother and beloved grandmother, she is survived by daughter Sharon M.
and son-in-law Henry R. Mastroni of Montgomery Village, Maryland, grandsons Hugh
A. Mastroni of Wichita Falls, Texas, and Paul R. Mastroni of Gaithersburg,
Maryland and three great grandsons.
She
was preceded in death by her only sibling, Donald Evans, of Dunmore,
Pennsylvania, who worked for the DL&W and was a member of the East Scranton
Hunting Club.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday at 10 a.m., February 24, 2009, in the
Cathedral Cemetery Chapel. Interment
will be in the Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton, Pennsylvania.
A memorial service is planned for 11 AM on Saturday, March 21, 2009 at the Gaithersburg Presbyterian Church in Maryland. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made in her name to the Alzheimer’s Association of Suburban Maryland, 1738 Elton Road #302, Silver Spring, Maryland 20903 or Suburban Hospital Foundation, 8600 Old Georgetown Road, Bethesda, Maryland 20814. Her loving spirit, wonderful humor and ready smile will be greatly missed.
