Edward H. "Etz" Kearney
May 25, 2009
Edward Henry “Etz” Kearney, 93, a longtime resident of Madisonville Township,
formerly of the East Mountain section of Scranton died Monday evening in the
Mountain View Care Center. His wife, the
former Mary Kane, died February 17, 2008.
He was born in Scranton, the son of the late Christopher J. and Mary Kuehner
Kearney. He was a member of St.
Catherine of Siena Church, Moscow and prior to retirement had been employed as a
Brakeman for the Laurel Line Railroad, the proprietor of the Waldorf Store, East
Mountain, a dairy farmer in Madisonville Township, the Lackawanna County
Assessor’s Office and a real estate agent for John J. Lavelle Realtors.
At nineteen years of age, he lost his arm while working on the railroad.
He promised God that if he lived through
that difficult time he would enjoy every day of the rest of his life and he did.
He loved his wife, daughters, grandchildren, great grandchildren,
sisters, brothers, nieces and nephews, neighbors, animals, wildlife and all of
nature’s gifts.
His sense of humor was quick and his wit was sharp. His jokes and stories were
endless. He was proud of his hard
work and independence despite his handicap. But
mostly he was proud of being everybody’s Grampy.
We loved him and in some way every day we will miss him, think of a
lesson we learned from him or laugh at a funny memory. Thank you God for giving
us Grampy.
Surviving are two daughters, Mary Rose Reuther and her husband P. J., Scranton,
Eileen Conway and her husband Robert, Scranton; a sister, Mary Buttner and
husband Fred, Scranton; three brothers, Richard “Dick” Kearney, Scranton Robert
“Ange” Kearney, Madisonville & Joseph "Mouse" Kearney and his wife Patricia,
Peckville; five grandchildren, William Sullenberger, James Sullenberger, Erin
McNamara and her husband Shane, Ellen Conway Hoban, Molly Conway, all of
Scranton; two great grandchildren, Jordan Checho and Bobby Hoban; several nieces
and nephews.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Paul, Christopher, Lawrence, William;
