Robert
E. Andres
August 5, 2009
Robert E. Andres, 88, a lifelong resident of South Scranton died early Wednesday
morning in the Mountain View Care Center. He
was married for 65 years to the former Mary Helen Needham.
Robert was born in Scranton in 1920, the son of the late Ernest and Beatrice
O'Boyle Andres. He was educated in Scranton Public Schools, graduated from
Scranton Technical High School in 1938. Robert
was a Navy veteran of World War II serving as an Aviation Machinist Mate II
Class Aerial Gunner with the Combat Air Service Unit F-11 in Okinawa.
He was a graduate of Aerial Gunnery
School in Quonset Point, RI and Aviation Machinist School in Memphis, TN.
While stationed in Okinawa, he received
accommodations for his expertise in aviation and aerial tactics, which helped
save the lives of his comrades. He
received the Pacific Theatre Battle Star and the American Theatre Victory Medal.
Prior to his service in the Navy, he was employed as a lead set-up machinist for
Bendix Aviation in Philadelphia. He
later started the businesses Modco Inc. and Modern Machine Shop, family-operated
businesses which he owned and managed for over 60 years.
Robert was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church and its societies. He was
also devoted to St. Ann's weekly novena, which he regularly attended. He enjoyed
reading, gardening, traveling, and many outdoor activities at his farm in
Covington Township. However, he was fondest of spending time with his loving
wife, children, and grandchildren. His family was always at the center of his
life, whether it be teaching his children how to plant a garden in their
backyards or telling tales of his youth to his grandchildren. He was a man of
great wisdom, strength, patience, and endearment, and on account of the examples
he set, these qualities will surely be exemplified by his family.
The family would like to thank
the staff at Mountain View Care Center and Hospice of the Sacred Heart for their
kindness and support.
Also
surviving are his children, a son Robert G. Andres and his wife Kathryn; a
son-in-law, Frank T. Yakupcin; a daughter Judith A. Walsh and her husband,
Leonard; nine grandchildren, Robert D., Jennifer, Michael, David, Sarah, and
Joseph Andres, Kaitlin Andres-Yakupcin, and Alesia and Leonard Walsh, as well as
nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He
was preceded in death by a daughter, Maureen Andres-Yakupcin in June of 2002,
and two grandchildren Marie Andres and Matthew Andres, three brothers; Joseph
Andres, William Andres, and Girard Andres and a sister Mary Barrett.
The
funeral will be Saturday at 9:30 am from the Miller Bean Funeral Home, Inc. 436
Cedar Avenue with Mass at 10:00 a.m in St. John the Evangelist Church, on the
corner of Pittston Avenue and Fig Street. Interment,
St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Covington Township.
