J. Troy
October 14, 2009
Joseph John Troy, 82, a resident of Scranton died early Wednesday morning
in St. Mary’s Villa, Moscow. His wife the
former Elizabeth Sandy died September 3, 1999.
He was born on November 19, 1926 in Scranton, the son of the late Mary
and Frank Troy. He was a member of St.
Francis of Assisi Church, Scranton and took great pride in being a graduate of
Scranton Technical High School. After
serving as a Seabee with the US Navy during World War II he returned to civilian
life and was employed from 1944 until 1975 by the Atlantic and Pacific Tea
Company. Afterwards he opened a
grocery store of his own, starting with only a small amount of merchandise it
soon thrived under his remarkable determination, expertise and partnership with
his son Joe. Today, the Crown Market in
South Scranton is the only small grocery store still standing out of the
fourteen that originally existed in the South Scranton area at the time of its
opening.
His attributes were many; he embodied kindness, optimism, boundless love
and devotion to his family. Each of his
grandsons and their mates returned his love with regular visits, trips to
Atlantic City and assistance with anything else needed.
The humor and eternal optimism he displayed were a source of strength to
his family even as his health failed. He
will forever be an inspiration to all whose lives he touched in some way.
The Troy and Huester families would like to convey deep appreciation to
the staff at St. Mary’s Villa for their devotion and the compassionate care that
they provided to Joseph during his four month stay at the facility.
