Peter J. O'Malley

        Peter J. O’Malley, 73, a resident of Scranton, died Wednesday morning after a brave fight with cancer.  His wife of 48 years is the former Katherine Riedmiller.

        He was born on March 27, 1936 in Scranton, the son of the late Peter A. and Mary L. O’Neill O’Malley and a member of Nativity of Our Lord Church.  He graduated as valedictorian from South Catholic High School, Class of 1954, was awarded a full academic scholarship to the University of Scranton and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree.  While in college he was a member of the ROTC and went on to serve in the US Army as a 1st Lieutenant.

        After college and the armed forces he was an English teacher on Long Island, NY, later he traveled many states while working as a salesman for the Planters Peanuts Co. and as a National Sales Trainer and District Manager for Cole National Corporation in Ohio and Missouri.  Prior to retirement he worked as a salesman for local electrical supply companies.

        He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle and brother who enjoyed being with his family.  He was proud of his “four great kids”.  He was a quiet, brilliant man, a gifted writer who served as editor of his high school newspaper.  He was very entertaining on the dance floor, enjoyed television, fishing, reading and spending time at the park.  He was a lifelong fan of the Boston Red Sox and the Philadelphia Eagles.

        Surviving are four daughters, Kathleen O’Malley, Staten Island, NY, Maureen Capone, Mesa, AZ, Patricia Fratzola and her husband Joseph, Factoryville, Lisa O’Malley, Scranton; two granddaughters, Jessica Fratzola and Amanda Fratzola; a sister, Margaret Lamasney, Ridgefield Park, NJ; nieces, nephews and his dog Bandit.

        He was preceded in death by a sister, Claire O’Malley.

        The funeral will be Saturday from the Miller Bean Funeral Home, Inc., 436 Cedar Avenue with Mass at 9:30 a.m. in Nativity of Our Lord Church, 633 Orchard Street.  Interment will be in the St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Covington Township.

        Friends may call on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
