Harold Fred Koester, 74, a resident of Scranton, died Thursday afternoon
in the Taylor Nursing Home after a brief battle with throat Cancer.
He was born in Scranton, the son of the late George and Anna Scheller
Koester. He attended St. Mary’s of the
Assumption School and was a former member of St. Mary of the Assumption Church.
He was a veteran of the US Army, serving
in 82nd Airborne Infantry as a paratrooper.
He was a member of the Nativity Social
Club, the American Ukrainian Veterans Association, the Columbus Club and the
Lithuanian Club. Prior to retirement he
was employed as a truck driver by Wonder Bread Co., Gress Poultry and DeFazio
Trucking.
He was affectionately known as “Happy Harry” and “Ole’ Blue Eyes”.
He loved fishing and enjoyed fishing trips to Canada.
He enjoyed betting on the Price is Right
with his friends.
The family would like to thank Geisinger Health Center, Lake Scranton;
Dr. Martin and his nurse Mary; Dr. Kurt Moran; the CMC Hospital; Mercy Hospital;
Dr. Pritchert; Compassionate Hospice Care; Dunmore Health Care Center and most
of all the Taylor Nursing home for their kind and compassionate care.
Surviving is are two daughters, Kathleen Koester, Scranton, Lynne Marie
Augustinski, Moosic; two sons, Harold W. Koester, Moosic and Joseph Koester,
Scranton; a sister, Louise Koester, Buffalo, NY; eleven grandchildren, seven
great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, James Edward Koester; two brothers,
Bernard Koester, Girard Koester; a sister, Gertrude Koester.
A blessing service will be held on Monday at 7 p.m. in the Miller Bean
Funeral Home, Inc., 436 Cedar Avenue. Interment
will be held privately at the convenience of the family.
