William H. Tonkin Sr., 84, a longtime resident of Scranton, died late
Thursday evening in the Moses Taylor Hospital Emergency Department after
battling heart disease. He and his wife
the former Helen A. Wegge would have celebrated their 65th wedding
anniversary June 25, 2010.
He was born in Carbondale, the son of the late Robert and Brunetta
Tonkin, attended Scranton Technical High School and was a member of St. Peters
Cathedral. He was a veteran of WW II
serving with the US Navy and received several service and campaign medals.
Prior to retirement he was employed as a
machinist at the Grove Textile Mill in Dunmore.
He loved his family and was proud of his two grandsons.
He was fiercely patriotic and proud of
his country.
Also surviving are a son, William
H. Tonkin, Jr. and his wife Barbara, Scranton; two grandsons, Billy Tonkin,
Scranton and Captain T. J. Tonkin, US Army, stationed at Fort Bliss in El Paso TX;
nephews.
The family would thank Dr. Richard Martin and the staff at Geisinger
Health Care System, Scranton Pocono Highway for all their kindness and care.
He was preceded in death by a brother Robert Tonkin; a sister Virginia.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. from the Miller Bean Funeral
Home, Inc., with Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Peter’s Cathedral, 315 Wyoming Avenue.
Entombment will follow in the Cathedral
Cemetery.
