John W. Laird

March 4, 2010

John W. Laird, 65, a longtime resident of Springbrook Township, passed away Thursday afternoon in the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania after an illness. He and his wife the former Diane M. Herbert celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary October 17, 2009.

He was born in Elmhurst, PA, the son of the late John W. and Ruth Webb Laird Sr. He was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School class of 1963.  He had been employed by W.W. Norton and Company Inc., Dunmore and most recently as a greeter at Sam’s Club, Dickson City. He was a member of the former Greenridge Bowling League.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother/brother-in-law and uncle. A caring man who showed much compassion, always ready to offer a hand to someone in need. He had an open door policy for everyone and was known by many of his children’s friends as Pop Laird. He was dearly loved and will be sadly missed, but we rejoice as he goes to be with the Lord. He could always be found at the grill during every outing, enjoying gathering with his family and friends, famous for his wimpies, hot sausage and pepperoni.  He was always there for his family and ready to babysit his grandchildren who were the light of his life. He enjoyed antique car shows, the Redskins, Red Barons baseball games, bowling and indulging on Coney Island texas wieners.  He is, was and always will be in our hearts, never forgotten and the reason for the best years of our lives.

Surviving are two daughters, Rebecca Phillips and her husband Jeffery, Grafton, OH, Beth Murray and her husband Scott, Moscow; two sons, John J. Laird and his wife Christy, Clarks Summit, Kevin J. Laird, Springbrook Township; three sisters, Phyllis Mecca and husband Anthony, Throop, Florence Keith, Madisonville, Lynn Peters, Scranton; seven grandchildren, Jeffery Phillips Jr., Katelyn Murray, Adam Phillips, Miranda Murray, Sarah Murray, Alexis Laird, Jacob Laird; nieces and nephews.
