Arleen O'Donnell Murray

        Arleen O’Donnell Murray, 88, a lifelong resident of the East Mountain section of Scranton, died Saturday evening in the Mountain Rest Nursing Home after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.  She was the widow of Thomas G. Murray Sr. who died on January 18, 1977.

        She was born in Scranton, the daughter of the late John and Mollie Roedel O’Donnell.  She was a graduate of Central High School, a member of the Holy Name of Jesus Church, the Church Choir and the Altar and Rosary Society.  She was a former member of the Parents Teachers Association.

        She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and aunt who will be greatly missed.  She was proud of her children and grandchildren’s accomplishments.  She loved to travel and above all enjoyed her many trips to Hawaii.

        The family would like to thank the staff at the Mountain Rest Nursing Home for the kind and considerate care she received.  Also to the Hospice of the Sacred Heart, whose care and compassion helped Arleen and her family, our deepest heartfelt thanks.

        Surviving are a daughter, Barbara Tonkin and her husband William H. Tonkin Jr., Scranton; a son Dr. John Murray and his wife Cynthia, Doha, Qatar; a brother, John O’Donnell Jr. and his wife Betty, Moscow; a daughter in law, Catherine Murray, St. Johns Island, SC; five grandchildren, Timothy Murray ESQ., Arlington, VA, Mollie Murray, Pittsburgh, Keith Murray, Berwyn Heights, MD  Billy Tonkin, Scranton and Captain T.J. Tonkin, US Army stationed at Fort Bliss El Paso, TX, nieces and nephews.

        She was preceded in death by a son Dr. Thomas G. Murray Jr.; a sister, Jacquelyn O’Donnell Marker.

        The funeral will be on Friday at 9 a.m. from the Miller Bean Funeral Home Inc., 436 Cedar Avenue, with Mass at 9:30 a.m. in the Holy Name of Jesus Church, at the corner of East Elm Street and Froude Avenue, East Mountain.  Interment will follow in the Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton.

        Friends may call on Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m.  Memorial contributions can be made in her memory to Hospice of the Sacred Heart, 600 Baltimore Drive, Wilkes Barre, PA   18702-7901.
