James M. Hiller, 88, a lifelong resident of the East Mountain section of
Scranton, died Friday morning in the Mountain View Care Center where he was a
resident since 2004. His first wife the former Mabel Dommes, died July 17,
1983, his second wife the former Beverly Bell, died December 25, 2003.
He was born in Scranton, the son of the late William and Catherine Hurt
Hiller. A graduate of St. Mary's High School, he was a member of Trinity United
Church of Christ, its Church Council, Church Ministry Committee, Membership
Committee Chairman, and Worship Services and Publicity Chairman for many years.
He served in the US Army Air Corp, 322nd Squadron of the 94th Bomb Group during
WW II. His decorations and awards include the European Theatre of Operations
Ribbon with two battle stars, the Purple Heart and Cluster of the Purple Heart,
the Air Medal, the Presidential Citation and the Good Conduct Medal.
He worked for Sprague and Henwood, Inc. for 27 years, was the principal
of the School of Machine Shop at the International Correspondence Schools and
employed at Garlet Manufacturing when he retired in 1984.
He was also a member of the American Legion Major Edward J. Poch Post
#948, and the 94th Bomb GP 1942 A
1945 8th Air Force. He was past
treasurer for 22 years of the Lackawanna Lodge, Independent Order of Odd
Fellows, Past Noble Grand and Past District Deputy Grand Master.
The family would like to thank the Staff at the Mountain View Care Center
for their kind and compassionate care.
Surviving are a son, Wayne Hiller and his wife Nancy, Scranton; a
daughter Wendy Tohme and her husband
Dr. Tohme Tohme, Los Angeles, CA; a brother Robert Hiller, Scranton; four
grandchildren, Joanna Hiller, Scranton, Andrea Hiller, Scranton, Ramez Tohme,
Los Angeles, CA, Tarek Tohme, Los Angeles, CA; nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph Hiller and William Hiller
The Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday at 10 am in the Trinity
United Church of Christ, at the corner of Prospect Avenue and Beech Street, with
services by the Reverend Harrison Putnam, pastor.
Interment will follow in the Abington Hills Cemetery, South Abington
Township.
Friends may call on Monday from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Miller Bean Funeral
Home, Inc., 436 Cedar Avenue, and on Tuesday from 9 a.m. until time of Services
in the Church. Memorial contributions can be made in his memory to the Trinity
