First Sergeant Joseph W. Shelski, Retired

        First Sergeant, Joseph W. Shelski, Retired, 77, a long time resident of Scranton died Saturday afternoon in the Golden Living Center after a lengthy illness.

        He was born in Scranton, the son of the late Francis J. and Genevieve Shelski Krushinsky.  He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians, Society of American Magicians, Magicians Alliance of Eastern States and the National Rifle Association.  He was a life member of the Disabled American Veteran Chapter Wm. C. Malia #1, American Legion Post 0665, Veteran of Foreign War Post 3451, 101st Airborne Division, and a life member of the Association of the US Army.  He retired from the US Army; where he served with the 101st Airborne Division.  During his service he received the Bronze Star Medal, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal with 1 bronze star, Vietnam Service medal with 3 bronze service stars, Combat Infantry Man Badge, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Ribbon with Device and Drill Sergeant ID Badge.  After retirement from the US Army he was employed by the Scranton Hobby Center, did Magic by Ski and was the Santa Claus at the former Globe Department Store for many years.

        Surviving are three brothers, his caregiver Stanley Krushinsky, Scranton, Frankie Krushinsky, Scranton and John Krushinsky, Wilkes Barre; two sisters, Barbara Rooney, Scranton, Elizabeth Henderson, Scranton, his niece and caregiver, Jean Price, Scranton; additional nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

        He was preceded in death by a sister Ann Perotti who died May 12, 2010 and prior to her brief illness was one of his caregivers.  A brother, Eddie Krushinsky.

        The funeral will be on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. from the Miller Bean Funeral Home, Inc., 436 Cedar Avenue with Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Church, 1217 Prospect Avenue, Scranton.  Interment will be private for the family in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, PA.

        Friends may call on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home.  Memorial contributions can be made in his memory to the Hospice of the Sacred Heart, 600 Baltimore Drive, Wilkes-Barre, PA   18702-7950.
