William A. Zielinski

        William A. “Willie” “Popeye” Zielinski, 78, a lifelong resident of Scranton died Saturday afternoon in the Mercy Hospital Emergency Department after a lengthy illness.  He and his wife the former Audrey S. Parry, celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary on November 25, 2010.

        He was born in Scranton, the son of the late Valentine and Anna Namiotka Zielinski.  He was a member of Saint Paul of the Cross Parish and was a devoted caretaker at Sacred Heart of Jesus and Mary Church.  He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving with the US Navy and after his active duty he continued his service to the country with the US Naval Reserves in the MCB-21 (“Seabees”), and as a career counselor, retiring after thirty four years of service.  He was a member of the USS New Jersey Veterans, Inc., the American Legion Post 0966 and a five gallon blood donor through the Scranton Chapter of the American Red Cross.  He had been employed by Parodi Cigars, retired from Topps Chewing Gum and after retirement he worked part time for William Edwards Florist, as he would say, “Delivering Love”.

        He was always there for his family; he was handy with woodworking and enjoyed making doll houses and various holiday decorations for his family.  He was known too many as the “Candy Man”.

        Also Surviving are a son, Richard W. Zielinski, Throop, who is employed by Lockheed-Martin; a daughter, Kathryn A. Walsh and her husband Robert, Scranton; a brother, Michael Zielinski and his wife Sharon, Scranton; two sisters, Florence Crolick, Scranton, Theresa Catalano and her husband Mario, Scranton; five grandchildren, Jennifer Linsenbigler and her husband George, Taylor, Desiree J. Zielinski, Throop, Joseph J. Walsh, Scranton, William E. Walsh, Scranton and Eileen S. Walsh, Scranton; two great grandchildren, Gabriel Linsenbigler and Evangeline Linsenbigler; nieces, nephews and cousins.

        The funeral will be on Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. from the Miller Bean Funeral Home, Inc., 436 Cedar Avenue with Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Church, 1217 Prospect Avenue, Scranton.  Interment will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Scranton.

        Friends may call on Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.  Memorial contributions can be made in his memory to Saint Paul of the Cross Parish, 1217 Prospect Avenue, Scranton, PA. 18505-1716.
