Mario "Iggy" Catalano

        Mario “Iggy” Catalano, 83, a lifelong resident of Scranton died Saturday afternoon in the Moses Taylor Hospital after a lengthy illness.  He and his wife the former Theresa Zielinski would have celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary on May 28, 2011.

        He was born in Scranton, the son of the late Salvatore and Mary Umile Catalano.  He was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus and Mary Church now part of Saint Paul of the Cross Parish.  He was one of the original members and a very active lifelong member of the 20th Ward Social and Athletic Club.  He had been employed by Capitol Records, where he meet his wife, later retiring from Topps Chewing Gum.

        He loved his family and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren; he was always there for his family and friends, always willing to help any way he could; a happy go lucky person who could usually be heard whistling a tune.

        The family would like to thank the second floor staff at the Moses Taylor Hospital and the doctors and staff at the Geisinger Lake Scranton Clinic for their kind and compassionate care.

        Also surviving are a son, Joseph Catalano and his wife Lynn, Scranton; a daughter, Barbara Zaretski and her husband Tony, Scranton; three grandchildren, Amy McCracken and her husband Bryan, Scranton, Brian Zaretski, Scranton and Danielle Catalano, Scranton; a great granddaughter, Mia Ashley McCracken; two brothers, Nicholas Catalano, Scranton, Louis Catalano, Kankakee, IL; nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews.

        He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Ashley Zaretski; a sister, Antoinette Luciani; two brothers, Hugo Catalano and Walter Catalano.

        The funeral will be on Friday at 9:30 a.m. from the Miller Bean Funeral Home, Inc., 436 Cedar Avenue, with Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Church, 1217 Prospect Avenue, Scranton.  Interment will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Scranton.

        Friends may call on Thursday from 5 to 9 p.m.
