Peter J. Gavern Jr.

        Peter J. Gavern Jr., 85, a resident of the Minooka section of Scranton died Saturday morning in the Community Medical Center after a brief illness.  His wife the former Marion Morrison died March 10, 1995.

        He was born and raised in South Scranton, the son of the late Peter J and Frances Gavern and a member of Saint Francis of Assisi Church now part of Saint Paul of the Cross Parish.  He was a member of the former Mountaineers Social Club; an active member of the Junior Mechanics Club and his bowling league, where he enjoyed the company of his friends.  He was employed as a meat cutter at Gutheinz Meats Inc., for 40 years, were he enjoyed his customers; and over the past twenty years, he also enjoyed working for the Scranton School District as a crossing guard.

        He died Saturday with his loving family at his side; his greatest love was his family for whom he had tremendous pride, he especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.  He was a kind and generous man who was always a joy to be around and always there to lend a hand.  A loving father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend to all who knew him, he was loved by all and will be greatly missed.

        Surviving are a two daughters, Diane Gavern, whom he resided with, Theresa Fox and her husband Fred, Old Forge; son, Peter Gavern, Bucks County; seven grandchildren, Stephanie, Michelle, Natalie Fox, Melissa, Jackie, P.J. and Katie Gavern; two brothers, John Gavern and his wife Gail, Scranton , Louis Gavern and his wife Frances, Scranton; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

        He was preceded in death by three brothers, Nicholas, Frank, Victor Gavern; a sister Mary Tutino; an infant grandson.

        The funeral will be on Friday at 9:30 a.m. from the Miller Bean Funeral Home, Inc., 436 Cedar Avenue with Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Saint Francis of Assisi Church, 628 Genet Street.  Interment will follow in the Italian American Cemetery, Scranton.
