David R. Owens, 73, died early Saturday morning in the VNA Inpatient Unit
at Community Medical Center after a courageous battle with lung cancer.
He and his wife the former Sarah “Sally”
Thomas would have celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary on August
29, 2011.
He was born in Scranton the son of the late William and Lillian Thompson
Owens. He attended Scranton Technical
High School and was a member of the parish community of Immaculate Conception.
He was a veteran of the United States
Navy and served with the Pennsylvania National Guard's 109th
Infantry. Prior to retirement he was
employed as a maintenance electrician by GNB, the former Gould Battery, Dunmore.
He was an avid reader. His
family and his dog Prince were his pride and joy.
The family would like to thank Traditional Home Health Care and the VNA
Hospice Inpatient Unit for their excellent care.
He is also survived by his two daughters, Mary Elizabeth Owens, Scranton,
Kimberly Jurgiewicz and her husband Walter, Old Forge; a granddaughter, Anysia
Jurgiewicz.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert Owens, Donald Owens,
William Owens; a sister Lillian Owens.
The funeral will be Thursday at 10 a.m. from the Miller Bean Funeral
Home, Inc., 436 Cedar Avenue, with Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. in the
Immaculate Conception Church, 801 Taylor Avenue.
Interment will follow in the Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton.
