Delbert E. Herne

        Delbert E. Herne, 62, a lifelong resident of Scranton died early Tuesday morning at home after a lengthy illness.  He and his wife the former Alma Fox celebrated their 36th wedding anniversary on February 16th.

        He was born in Scranton the son of the late Valentine and Lucille Davis Herne.  He was a graduate of West Scranton High School Class of 1967.  He served his country with the United States Army during the Vietnam War; he was the recipient of the Purple Heart, the Award of the Air Medal for Heroism and the Bronze Star.  He was a member of St. George’s Social Club.  Prior to his illness he worked as a tree trimmer and in air conditioning and heating.

        He loved spending time with his grandchildren and was a wonderful husband, father; grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and nephew who will be greatly missed.  He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

        The family would like to thank Dr. Eric Smith, Dr. Michael Turock, Dr. Kevin Olson and their staff, Traditional Home Health and Care Plus Oxygen for all their wonderful care. 

        Surviving are five children, Keith Herne and his wife Christine, Scranton, Wendy Mailler and her husband Matthew, Scranton, Cynde Mellen and her husband Joseph, Taylor, Bobby Burke and his wife Judy, Taylor, Mark Burke and his wife Lisa, Scranton; seven grandchildren, Louis Burke, Jasmine Mailler, Jordan Mailler, Matthew Herne, Victoria Herne, Ryan Burke and Aidan Burke; two brothers, Valentine Herne and his wife Virginia, Gouldsboro, David Herne and his wife Sandy, San Diego, CA; two sisters, Janice Sweetman, Scranton, Lorraine Poltroneri and her husband Charles, Scranton; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

        He was preceded in death by a son, Jeffrey Burke; a sister, LouAnn Shackelton.

        The funeral services will be held privately.

        Friends may call on Thursday from 5 to8 p.m. in the Miller Bean Funeral Home, Inc., 436 Cedar Avenue.  In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made in his memory to Parents Loving Children Through Autism Foundation, 1243 Wyoming Avenue, Scranton, PA 18509.
